Etymology

The phrase "three sheets to the wind: is a euphemism that refers to being intoxicated. It's a nautical thing. Sheets are ropes that hold a sail in place allowing a sailboat to use the wind to move forward. Large ships can have three or more sheets holding the massive sails in place. If those sheets aren't tied properly, they can give way and end up flapping around in the wind. As a result, the boat can't move forward, and just kinda bobs up and down -- like a drunken sailor.

Notes

This seed is basically a cluster of frozen islands. Trees are at a premium. There's a really cool mushroom island (see photo above) that's like tall and curved. There's also some really cool ravines in this one. The nether is cramped and sectioned into pockets. A tough one all the way around.

Etymology

Keelhaul is a form of corporal punishment. When a sailor disobeyed an order or was accused of mutiny, a rope was slung under the boat and tied to the sailor in question. Then, the rest of the sailors pulled the line and drug him under the boat and back up the other side. Possible results: cuts, scratches, lacerations, amputation, decapitation, and drowning.

Today's Seeds: June 16, 2013

Today's seeds are all about pairings. Once again, it turns out at the end of the day that many of these are food related because I get hungry while playing XBOX. I don't know why that happens, but there's something about all those chickens and mooshroom cows wondering around that gets my microwave going.

Etymology

After World War II, the city of Berlin was divided into two parts: east and west. East Berlin was controlled by Russia; the West by American/English administrators. Due to the restrictive nature of communism, East Berlin became a truly repressive place to live. Though 99% of the wall is gone, to this day you can distinguish both sides by looking at the architectural differences (visible even in aerial photographs).

Notes

The ender portal on this level has four eyes already in place, so that's nice. Also, you're going to find some good mountains and a nice nether.

Etymology

You know in cartoons when someone has to sign on the dotted line and they make an "X"? That's a real life thing. Historically, people who didn't know how to write their own name would use a crisscross -- which comes from "Christ's cross". Originally it wasn't an "X", but an actual cross and people would sign with the Christian cross to promise "to God" to fulfill the contract. Over time, the cross got tipped on it's side and now is an "X".

Today, the word "crisscross" means to cross over and then back (think laces on a shoe).

Notes

Tons of villages, including three big ones. One of them even has diamonds. I found some really nice old-school rock formations -- not the least of which is an epic-sized land bridge.
