Today's Seeds: May 29, 2013

Hey all. Not a whole lot of selection and I'm sure some of you have noticed that "pestleandmortar" had and abysmal score and yet somehow made the list. Well, that's because I found a "black cave" that I simply could not ignore. So, just for the sake of the photo, he made the list.

  • [20.5] quatrefoil
  • [18.8] knothole
  • [17.3] magic8ball

Etymology

Derived from Latin, quatre means "four" and foil means "leaf". Although used chiefly in architecture, the word can also be used to describe a four-leaf clover.

Notes

This is a really nice level -- despite the obvious lack of surface to work with. The keys are all unique and really interesting while the peninsula is the place to go for resources and adventure.

Etymology

The wood of a tree isn't the tree -- that's the dead part. The living part is the bark. When a tree branch gets yanked off, the bark of the tree will grow around the wound. This becomes a knot. Once the tree is turned into lumber, sometimes these knots will fall away, leaving a hole.

Notes

I found a half-library with a dungeon attached to it. The nether is really sweet on this one.

Notes

The southwest corner has some alright hills, but the big draw of this seed are the large deserts. I found a really cool ravine that was split into two by a hunk of land in the middle and the ender portal stronghold is another one of these broken affairs.

Seed Number: 205 097 5997
Version: XBL 1.4 (TU9) (no PC equiv)

Etymology

The drug industry was originally random guys -- known as apothecaries -- standing around grinding animal bones and other such nonsense into dust using a bowl (mortar) and a heavy club (pestle) so that sick people could dissolve the "medicine" in water and drink it. Most of the mummies that were buried in the Egyptian desert were lost in this way -- dissolved in water to "cure" the superstitious.

Notes

Normally, this seed would never have made the cut, but the black cave I found was something I couldn't ignore. Aside from that, this seed is standard patchwork boredom.

Video: "xbone"

Hey, all. I made a little video showing off the massive hole inside of the seed "xbone".

You should have a look because the photo in the post below doesn't really do it justice. And while you're there, if you could tap the subscribe button for me, that would help out a lot. Enjoy!

Etymology

You know when you're launching a brand new video game console and you forget to register the domain name for said console -- then someone from England registers the name and holds it hostage for a couple thousand dollars? Yeah, neither do I. But Microsoft does. Henceforth, such monumentally obtuse feats will be referred to as "pulling an x-bone".

Notes

A stunning level. There are some killer extreme hills, a few great old-school overhangs, a massive flat expanse of desert, and a large ravine/cave system with tons to see and do. Not to mention two villages with enough free obsidian in their chests to make a nether portal. All-in-all, a great seed with a little something for everybody.

Villages

  • [276.75.324] village, x6 buildings, guard tower, blacksmith, water well, x6 obsidian
  • [-154.70.261] village, x12 buildings, water well, guard tower, blacksmith, also has x6 obsidian

Underground

  • [-63.59.-115] stunning massive crater/ravines
  • [20.61.62] dungeon, spider, x1 chest, music disk #13
  • [-190.27.348] t-shaped deep ravine intersection, x3 gold

Seed Number: 5999 9928
Version: XBL 1.4 (TU9) (no PC equiv)

Etymology

I was playing Call of Duty yesterday and I went 34-1, with the final kill coming in the last ten seconds of gameplay from a lightning strike. That was what we in the industry refer to as a shellacking. Past tense: they were shellacked.

Notes

"shellacked" is, without question, one of the most stunning and amazing seeds I've found in the TU9 era. Above ground, there are some amazing gorges, cliffs, and extreme hills. Below, there are ravines piled on top of each other and mixed with caves in such a way that you can't discern which are is ravine and which is cavern. The nether has one of the biggest nether fortresses I've ever seen. All the way around, this one is a must play.

Can't Miss

"The Blue Cave" is a stunning and confusing place. Basically, it's the convergence of four ravines and two separate cave systems, all of which have dug out the bottom so it's just a vast expanse full of waterfalls and lava floors. It's beautiful, but you can easily get lost in this thing, so brings signs or something to help you. I picked the entrance that is the least confusing and used it as the coordinates below, but there are dozens of ways to get into this thing -- some of which break through directly onto the surface.
